G10 for Knife Handles - The Perfect Match
An often overlooked aspect of a knife’s functionality and comfort is its handle. Among the various materials used for knife handles, one stands out for its durability, strength, and aesthetic versatility: G10.
G10 is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate. It is built from layers of fiberglass cloth soaked in resin, then compressed and baked under extreme pressure. The result? A tough, lightweight, and highly durable material with excellent resistance to moisture, chemicals, and temperature changes. Developed in the 1950s, G10 was initially used in electrical insulators, but its properties have since made it a popular choice for knife handles, especially in tactical, outdoor, and EDC knives.
So why does Leucadia Blade Co prefer G10 over other materials for our CoreCollection handles? Keep reading!
1. Durability and Strength
One of the main reasons we favor G10 handles is its exceptional toughness. It has an impressive strength-to-weight ratio, making it highly resistant to impact and wear. This durability ensures that G10 handles can withstand heavy use, whether in the kitchen or the great outdoors, without showing signs of damage like cracking, chipping, or warping.
2. Water and Weather Resistance
G10 is non-porous, meaning it does not absorb moisture. This makes it an excellent choice for knives that will be exposed to wet environments, such as hunting, fishing, or outdoor camping knives. Unlike wood or other natural materials, G10 won’t swell, crack, or degrade when exposed to water, ensuring that the handle remains stable and reliable even in harsh conditions.
3. Lightweight
Despite its toughness, G10 is incredibly lightweight. This reduces the overall weight of the knife, making it easier to carry and use for extended periods. Whether you’re out in the field or using the knife for everyday tasks, the lightness of a G10 handle ensures comfort without compromising strength.
4. Grip and Texture
One of the defining characteristics of G10 is its customizable texture. Manufacturers can etch or machine different patterns onto the surface of G10 to enhance grip. Our G10 scales are CNC’d with a subtle texture offering a secure hold, even when wet or slippery. This is crucial for both safety and performance, especially on the ocean.
5. Versatile Aesthetics
G10 is available in a wide range of colors and patterns, allowing us to create handles that are not only functional but visually appealing. Currently, we offer G10 handles in four colors: black, blue and black, gray and black, and brown. There’s something for everyone!
6. Temperature and Chemical Resistance
G10 can withstand extreme temperatures without losing its structural integrity, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who may encounter various environmental conditions. Additionally, it is resistant to many chemicals, ensuring that the handle won’t degrade when exposed to oils, solvents, or other harsh substances.
In comparison to other handle materials you can find in our Custom Collection like wood, micarta, or abalone, G10 comes in clutch when durability and grip is a must-have. While our Koa wood and Abalone collection are eye-catching works of art straight from Mother Nature, you probably won’t want to risk your blade slipping off the side of your boat never to be seen again! Better off used in the safety of your kitchen or anywhere not on the water.
Whether you’re in the market for a reliable kitchen knife or a kick-ass fillet, a blade from our Core Collection made with a G10 handle is a solid investment that combines performance with durability.
